In the previous lesson, we worked with a limited palette of citrus materials and built simple accords. My goal was to teach you how each material behaves in a clear, simple way. You learned how bergamot differs from lemon, how mandarin softens a composition, how petitgrain introduces a green note, and how molecules like limonene or dihydromyrcenol shift the character of a blend.
Now we move from combining materials to structuring them. This shift is key in learning perfumery, even if we are still restricting ourselves to 10 materials.
Instead of asking “what smells good together,” we begin to ask “what role does each material play in a complex mixture?” We will do it by follow 7 principles, which I will outline in this lesson.
