It’s that time of the year again. The season when the inbox attached to my blog, Bois de Jasmin, overflows with variations of the same question: what perfume makes men lose their minds? What fragrance drives women wild?
After twenty years working in the fragrance industry and even longer at the ballet barre, I can answer honestly. The first thing that comes to mind is not perfume.
In ballet, you learn that the way you step on stage matters. Even standing still is an action, because the body speaks before the face. Others register that long before they notice anything else about you.
A good perfume helps, if it strengthens your confidence. Anything that makes you feel more yourself, more at ease in your own skin, already does most of the work. If Chanel No. 5 makes you stand taller, or Guerlain Vétiver gives you composure, then that is your answer. Seduction is not a formula. It is context, chemistry, timing, and self-possession.
That said, there are patterns. I do not believe in bottled pheromones, despite how enthusiastically they are marketed. But after countless conversations with research and development teams, focus groups, and smelling tests, certain notes appear again and again as broadly appealing.
